Making Music
I believe the study of music is a vital part of a well-rounded education. I feel it is within everybody’s ability to play violin or viola. One does not need to possess special “talent,” but simply the desire to improve and the willingness to work. In addition to the sense of accomplishment and the joy of creating beautiful music, there are additional benefits to consider.
Numerous studies have shown:
• Playing a musical instrument improves verbal memory
• Students who study music have fewer behavioral and substance abuse problems
• Music making exercises can help children grasp difficult math concepts
• Students who study music get higher marks on standardized tests, including the SAT, than those with no music involvement
• Participation in music builds self-esteem and team working skills
I always take into account my students individual goals, whether it be the personal enrichment gained with the study of music, preparation for advanced study in pursuit of a career in music, or anything in between. I accept students from age 5 (depending on the child’s readiness) up through adults.
Adult beginners are very welcome! It’s never too late to begin.
